I don't think this means he can get off with a nice plea bargain.
Whatever he says means shit. He is grandstanding and talking tough, what he is paid to do. There are very few cases where a plea isn't preferable, and this isn't one of them. They want to close cases, not go to trial and risk a loss and spend unnecessary time and money.

I actually disagree. I think this is exactly the kind of case that screams "make an example out of him." They may offer him a plea, but I think the offer will be so bad he will try to take it to court.
