I actually used to go fishing as a kid on a boat off Redondo Beach in the '70s and '80s.
The most common fish I caught was mackerel, which tasted terrible. Pretty quickly decided just to throw them back.
Bonito also didn't taste good, though not as bad as the mackerel.
The two I enjoyed eating were the red snappper and the sand bass.
Caught a few sharks, too, but always tossed them back.
Never fished from Ensenada, but it's the same general region (less than 200 miles by air), with similar weather and ocean temps.
Did you go in the morning? I noticed that when I went on the early morning boats, though it was a pain in the ass getting up at the crack of dawn, I got FAR more bites. Seemed like at night (and even in the afternoon), I barely caught anything.
What exactly is the "yellow tail"? This isn't close to tuna is it?
Had this tonight... I have taken maybe three pictures of my dinner in my life.
"sushi grade" Yellow Fin Tuna coated with toasted sesame seed and quickly pan seared & rare using a cast iron skillet. Seaweed salad, wasabi, ginger & soy sauce.
It wasn't until I was almost done that I realized something this epic deserved to be memorialized. Piled on the wasabi with every thin slice and by the end my stomach was el fuego.

100% correct. bonito are terrible tho. too much iron in the blood and its a very very bloody fish.
