The new "rule" is not something I have to personally enforce. I'm going to build it into the software, and it will enforce itself. This will also stop other people from flipping out when drunk or whatever, and filling the front page with spam. That doesn't happen often, but when it does, it's a pain in the ass to clean up. So this isn't just for desertrunner.

It will also lay the groundwork for preventing anyone from dominating the forum, whether on purpose or accidentally.

I know that BCR thinks 10 desertrunner posts per day is excessive, but I don't think the number of posts is really the issue here. It's that you scroll down the front page and see his threads over and over, whereas nobody else has such a presence here.

I don't think this modification will impact any normal poster. For example, sonatine starts a number of threads (most of them good), but I don't recall the last time I've seen 8 of his on the front page. If, for whatever reason, this starts to impact normal forum operation, I can make tweaks or changes to where it doesn't. This is my mod, so it's easy to quickly change around until we find the sweet spot. But I don't even think that will be necessary.

Remember the thread bumping restrictions I wrote into the software back in June? Some complained at the time, but it's worked great. Nobody has found themselves restricted from legitimately bumping threads, while at the same time those who over-bump find themselves unable to keep doing so.

I believe that, between the June modification and the one coming up this week, I will have found the perfect middle ground between banning desertrunner and letting him dominate the forum.

If it still appears desertrunner is dominating the forum after this change, then I will seriously consider just banning him, or keeping him to a super-low restriction like 2 posts per day.



Finally, for those wondering why I would put in such effort over this, I don't mind these little programming projects. I enjoy these little programming challenges. I'm not exactly creating anything advanced or difficult, but I find it fun to dig into the software and find the most efficient and robust way to write these little mods. It's kinda like the guys who buy an old car with mechanical issues, just for the fun of fixing it.

Why fraud alert?

I've banned him before, and it stayed for a long time. We remained friends, and in fact didn't even have any behind-the-scenes drama about it. He texted me that he was frustrated about the ban, I texted back the reasoning for it, he accepted it, and we went back to talking about other things normally.

It's not like I'm worried about him becoming a SixToedPete if I ban him. I already did it before, and everything was 100% fine, as I expected. I wouldn't have been friends with him in the first place if I thought he had SixToedPete tendencies.

Starting whenever I implement it, the new system restriction will work as follows (in Flying Stupidity only):

1) You may NOT create a new thread if you already have 8 or more threads appearing on the front page. If you try, the system will not let you.

2) You may NOT bump your own thread if you already have 8 or more threads appearing on the front page, unless that thread is already sitting on the front page prior to being bumped. If you try, the system will not let you.

3) If you have a thread on the front page with 200 or more total posts, it will be excluded, and won't be counted towards the 8. However, if it's not already on the front page, the usual bumping rules apply, including #2 above. The reason for this is not to penalize someone with a long, ongoing thread (such as sonatine's bitcoin thread).

4) Others may bump your old threads onto the front page, even if more than 8 of your threads appear there. However, if I notice this getting abused just to trigger restrictions upon others, I will remove their ability to bump threads at all. This exception exists so OTHER people who enjoy your threads can bump them if they feel it's relevant to do so.

5) If you attempt to delete your recent last post in a thread in order to circumvent this rule (by knocking it off the front page), I will remove your bumping ability.

6) I will be excepted from all of the above, for obvious reasons. Nobody else will be excepted. However, as you've seen, I have tried very hard to be mindful of not dominating the forum with my own content.


8 is just the number in my head right now. Maybe when I implement it, I'll make it a bit higher or lower.




The truth is that nobody should be dominating the front page with their own threads, as this forum exists to present a wide variety of viewpoints, and is not meant for one person to use it as their own personal blog.

Regarding desertrunner, he will still have his 10 posts per day limit, but the additional restrictions above will apply to him and everyone else.

FYI, at the moment this wouldn't affect anyone else, based upon the current front page.

Tellafriend has 5 threads up there, but one would be excepted because it's over 200 posts, so his count right now would be 4.

sonatine has 5 threads as well, but two have over 200 posts, so his count would only be 3.

Nobody else has 5 or more threads on the front page at the moment, aside from me, desertrunner, sonatine, and Tellafriend.



Anyway, this should solve the issue -- or at least go a long way to improve the one-person-dominating issue.
