But that's fine. People are allowed to criticize me and state their opinions, but this is anything but a forum full of yes-men who believe that I always do everything right. In some cases I will reverse my decision if it is unpopular enough or I become convinced that I have made a mistake.
I do realize that it's the users -- not the owner -- who make a forum. That's why 2+2 is so big, despite the terribleness of Mason Malmuth. I try to always keep that in mind and attempt to give the people what they want in a forum.
The reason moderators are overrated, the biggest one anyway, is that they're very presence makes people angry. What does their presence mean exactly? That John Q forum dude is incapable of reading and following simple rules?
The trickiest part of dealing with humans is their damnable ego/emotional complex. Treat a child like a child and that's what you will always have, an aging child. A forum populated by adults thus is a no brainer, but like I said before, knowing how to do things right and actually doing this is pretty tough, so it seems.
You want adults so you cultivate an environment which produces them, cull the bad sprouts with grace and compassion and above all else, make sure the budding adult plants know they mean something to you more with actions than words, and presto, forum utopia, more or less.
