What should I have done here?

I showed up in the middle of a heated argument between two longtime former friends. The one in the right was the one who brought the situation out here (understandably), and the one in the wrong then responded with details which could easily be added up to figure out Hut's business.

Had I seen the OP, I would have redacted that info and told Marty he couldn't post it, but I showed up several pages in, when it seemed everyone already knew the info. At that point there were tons of other posts from third parties making reference to the info they learned.

What could I have possibly done at that point, short of shutting down the entire conversation?

just make sure you do it when druff is travelling or away from the board for a few, and post enough that it would seem silly/time-consuming to delete it at that point.

this place literally has no hard and fast rules, and suffers all the time because of it.

To delete/lock the Hut/Marty thread before it ran its course would have only served to let Marty off the hook easily, and wouldn't have done Hut any favors. Everyone knew where his pizza place was by then.

Sometimes "hard rules" fail the common sense test in certain situations. Other times they would be very unpopular.

You run a forum with no mods and you aren't always around. you refuse to pick up a mod, and now you refuse to enforce what used to be the only real, hard and fast rule, that people can't post public info of others that the other party didn't first make public themselves.

maybe don't unban marty when you aren't going to be around, for starters?

maybe have the people who broke the rules remove those references, or get banned? maybe do it yourself?

I mean, I could be wrong, but I didn't even see a warning about any of that shit.

in general, not enforcing a rule (again, the only real rule) because it got violated too many times and might be a pain for you to clean up, that's just not good forum-owning, IMO.

Just because you didn't get there right away is no reason to not enforce it after the fact. I know you run this place alone, but fuck man, that's on you, too.

Hockey Guy and Crowe both make some good points but ultimately I have to side with Todge on this one. Reason being it was Hut who made the original thread calling Marty out and he did this knowing what Marty knew about him and how Marty would react so he basically outed himself.

That's not to say Hut did anything wrong he made a choice and given how long he was owed I dont think it was a rushed decision. I am sure he knew when he made the thread calling Marty out that he would be on the receiving end of some good old fashioned MS word lockdown and that consequences will never be the same.

I'm sorry that you're out of pocket to run this forum & this isn't a fun or glamorous aspect of it but it needs to be done if you say "no personal info" otherwise just allow personal info & stop with the bullshit.

Also afaik Hut hasn't objected to Marty posting his pic and if you asked him he would likely say he knew Marty was going to be posting it. He even mentions in his first post that Marty had threatened to post the pic of him sleeping at his desk and thats why he took the one of Marty sleeping in his car, which he then posted.
