Sorry bud, that's on the state you live in. The Pro 2nd amendment people and the NRA have been fighting it for you for quite a while. Im pretty sure Illinois is the only state in the US where you need this ridiculous FOID card. I don't know the circumstances of why they took it from you and frankly I don't even know much about the FOID card itself, but if you cant get it back and you didn't commit a felony, moving to pretty much any other state in the US will solve the ability to buy a gun.
Story:I have liberal relatives on my wifes side who live in Illinois, and several years ago they were all over at my house for a get-together. One of the guests wanted to see one of my weapons I just bought and somewhere along the line I showed it and a couple questions were asked by bystanders like "when did you get it" this and that. Well they more or less discovered I just picked it up and one of them is like "well where is your card". I'm like...oh you mean my drivers license?? and they say, "no, where is your firearms card, you cant buy one without it" ...I just look at them with this confused stare while trying to prevent myself from laughing and say " what the hell are you even talking about"...."I just bought this yesterday with my credit card and drivers license".
The look on their faces was one ill never forget. It was like this combination of that I just committed some kind of major crime/ and I just discovered fire, all in one. They didn't even believe that I could do this until they looked it up for themselves and discovered that they were the only state in the US that required it's citizens to have a card. Of course that was met with the typical "this cant be legal" "no wonder why there are so many murders" bla bla bla....and I was just like..."well, if that's the case, then why is Illinois the murder capital of America??
