Also, the role of US and Britain has been greatly exaggerated. The Iranian political system pre-revolution was extremely complicated, with a lot of players at various levels. Like Western Parliament systems today.
Mosaddegh used indefinitely "emergency conditions" to suspend Parliament and give himself power way outside the purview of his office, to enact aggressive reforms, including but not limited to petroleum nationalization. Just as big a deal was land reforms, where he was essentially nationalizing agricultural land and angering a lot of landowners. There was an internal power struggle and he lost. The British and Americans certainly supported his internal enemies, but they didn't just do everything themselves.
The bottom line is that the Gulf nations that played ball with Britain and the US, honoring existing contracts while negotiating better ones over time, became tremendously wealthy off of it. And the ones that decided to tell the British and US to fuck off and nationalize everything became flaming piles of shit, and still are to this day.
