the thing thats confusing is he keeps on churning out side projects / books / HBO series screenplays / video game world building / etc. hes nothing if not productive.
i think hes just quietly decided to tank the project and hope that after hes dead people will be like 'wow what an enigmatic genius, how tragic, lets talk about him constantly'.

i really fucking hate this guy.
he does everything a writer shouldnt and botch jobs his own lifes work and then blames everyone but himself for poisoning the well.
im sympathetic to the extent that 'nailing the landing' is far and away the hardest part of writing but thats why they say 'write the ending first' and then create the rest of the story leading up to it.
also he paints himself here as some sort of personal confident of frank herbert, saying they met in 1975 'near the end of franks life' and how frank hated writing dune at that point but the money was too good to quit. 1) herbert didnt pass until 1986. he was 55 when they met (if they met at all). so he had another 20% of his life in front of him before he passed of pancreatic cancer related issues. 2) if hes not even being honest about the basic facts then hes probably also got his finger on the scale of franks feelings about dune. the next year, herbert dropped children of dune and 5 years later he dropped god emperor aka the point of the fucking books arguably.
my gut read is that frank complained a little about how he resented being forced to focus on one series, and that he did it in an incredibly off hand way, and that george over the years perhaps has morphed that casual off the cuff comment into his own 'get out of jail free' card for being sort of a flake about his fucking job.
in any case the real news here is he doesnt have any idea where 'fire and ice' is going. he literally says so. there is no ending, no notes sitting in a safe. and everything he writes, he apparently discards because it forces other changes that irk him.
really not digging this dudes schtick right now.
