Just watched Lakers get a pretty good win without Luka or Lebron, on the back of Austin Reeves scoring 50+. Lakers have won last 2 games, but could be pyrrhic victory down the road. Luka, Smart and Vincent injured on top of Lebron; without anyone coming back anytime soon. (so 4 of the top 6 rotation players will be out for foreseeable future).
Lakers team tomorrow in Portland is going to be as white as the crowd. There is definitely a possibility they have 4 white players on the floor at once (Reaves, Knecht, LaRavia, Manon*)
*Never even heard of this guy before tonight. He was on the Warriors summer league squad, and Lakers played them a couple times and I guess liked what they saw. But he is a guard who got a couple minutes tonight in front of Bronny, which is pretty embarrassing.
Now that I think about it pretty bad look for Bronny that Smart and Vincent went out this game with injuries and he couldn't get in the game. If he doesn't play (non blow out run) tomorrow with all the injuries and on a back to back, we will know JJ is done with him.
Mark Walter is now the majority Lakers owner.
Since 2021, Walter has owned 27% and the Buss family owned 66%.
Now Walter and his partner own 85%, and Buss family owns 15%.
The team valuation at the time of sale was $10b.
He can't just wildly spend like he does with the Dodgers, because of cap rules. Still interesting.
Jeannie Buss stays in charge... for now. She retains 15% ownership, so it looks like she kept most of what she owned, and the other Buss kids sold. Jeannie famously doesn't get along with her loser brothers, so this isn't a surprise.
Just wanted to bump this thread to LOL Blazers.
They played the Laker D team on a back to back and lost. The annoying thing was I knew Lakers were going to punt the game, so as soon as line came out I took Blazers -3. And then when it was predictably announced Luka and Reaves out (making 4 of the Lakers theoretical starting 5 out) line goes to 9. And Blazers lose outright.
I will say the Laker "strategy" was to just let the Blazers take a bunch of open 3's, which they mostly missed. While the Lakers took mostly 2's, with the notable exception of Nick Smith, who went 5-6 from 3. Blazers took twice as many 3's as Lakers and made the same number. And it isn't like Lakers had some lockdown D and Blazers couldn't score inside. They made most of their shots inside, but for whatever reason kept taking 3's instead of going inside, which they missed most of.
I am all for NBC having Primetime NBA games, but LOL making it a Clipper game on a back to back. You really think the Clippers (of all teams) are going to play their stars on the second night of a back to back, especially against the Thunder? NBC is crazy. Clippers are resting Kawhi and Beal, which is actually one of the better case scenarios.
Lakers are now 11-4. Lebron just came back tonight. Luka is thinner and looking better than last year. Austin Reaves is having a breakout season.
Contenders?
Maybe. But strength of schedule (so far) makes this a bit misleading.
They have played the Warriors, Timberwolves twice, Kings, Blazers twice, Thunder, Bucks, Hawks, Spurs, Heat, Pelicans, Hornets, Grizzles, and Jazz.
So there's some bad teams in there, padding the record. They did beat the Spurs, Bucks, and Timberwolves (twice), so that's good.
Lebron is about to have his 41st birthday. Maybe doesn't matter that much cuz of the roids.
OKC looks really tough this year.
There's also a lack of parity so far.
Indiana is 1-13, Washington is 1-12, Brooklyn is 2-12, New Orleans is 2-12, Sacramento is 3-11, and there are four teams who are 4-10 or 4-11.
Wembanyama out for weeks, if not more.
Uh oh.
Is he gonna be one of those always hurt but coulda been great guys?
The rumor is that we have the late Kobe Bryant to thank for no NBA Thanksgiving.
He complained that he was tired of not having Thanksgiving with his family, and put enough pressure on the league to stop scheduling NBA games on that day.
Occasionally there are a few NBA games (none this year), but for the most part, the NBA has Thanksgiving off.
I was pretty sure that’s an urban legend about the late rapist Kobe Bryant.
I can never recall NBA games on Thanksgiving
No, Kobe Bryant did not put an end to NBA games on Thanksgiving.
The NBA has never regularly scheduled games on Thanksgiving Day itself (the fourth Thursday in November). The league traditionally avoids playing on Thanksgiving to respect the holiday and family time for players, coaches, and staff.
What sometimes causes confusion:
- The NBA often schedules big games the day after Thanksgiving (Black Friday) or on Thanksgiving Eve (the night before).
- Kobe's famous 2010 performance — dropping 42 points against the Clippers on November 25, 2009 (the day before Thanksgiving) — is sometimes misremembered as being on Thanksgiving itself.
- There have been extremely rare exceptions in the past (e.g., a few games in the 1940s and 1950s), but by the modern era, Thanksgiving has been a no-game day long before Kobe entered the league.
In short: Thanksgiving NBA games were already not a thing during Kobe's career, and they still aren't today. The league respects the holiday, and Kobe didn't change that — it was already the norm.
Allegedly

The finals going 7 games bumped the average viewership for the entire series up by a million per game. What the NBA needs is another entire season of this bullshit.

I’m quite surprised Ty Lue still has a job given the clippers start and that Leonard has played a lot for him.
I think it might not be a Lue problem and they’re just old, but usually heads roll when you stink this bad with a veteran team. You see if someone can turn it around and if not go for the rebuild if they even have anything of value given their age and contracts. They are in a really bad spot.
As an aside, the Cavs need to make a big move whatever that is. Top luxury tax in the league and this core 4 shit is never getting over the hump. Just a treadmill team at this point. A good treadmill team, but not one I can see winning anything.
