As nerve-wracking as this bullpen metldown was, the ultimate win, combined with the fact that the Dodgers slugged 5 HR and scored 10 times, has doubled the price for tomorrow's game, in nearly all sections!

I can't stress how unusual this is, but I kinda saw it coming, because of the weird 3-game series which the Dodgers have never played before.

If they win the first, the next game is the potential series winner.

Typically ticket prices hit their low between 6 and 36 hours before game time. There are a few exceptions to this, but it's a pretty reliable rule of thumb. If you buy more than 48 hours before game time on the secondary market, you're a moron... usually.

Except this time I chose to be that moron, and bought 60 hours in advance. Why? As I mentioned before, I was noticing a weird low inventory issue in the section I normally buy. So that was a potential problem. Also, I got it at such a good price that there's no way it could have fallen much further. I knew I was at or near the floor price. Finally, I knew that a win in game 1 (which was likely) would push up the price -- though admittedly not to this extent.

Earlier today, the worst seats in the house for Game 2 were around $43, and seats comparable to mine were going for around $150. I was proud of myself for my outlier $109 purchase.

Now the worst seat is $86, and the ones comparable to mine are $300. Yes, I paid about 1/3 of what my tickets are now going for.

Nine rows back of me in the same aisle is selling for more than double of what I paid.

Yamamoto was the best pitcher in the NL in September. I hope it continues tomorrow. And please... score a lot of runs so the bullpen can't blow it.

The one thing I'm NOT looking forward to is the traffic. It's a 6:08pm start. I'm over 50 miles from Dodger Stadium. I hate that drive. Going home is fine, once I get out of the stadium and onto the freeway.

Look at that. You have Dodgers ML +140 tomorrow with Yamamoto against the lowly Reds. You saved some money on your seats. Rolling in EV

However, you’re stuck in your bargain seats til the final out. But it’ll be exciting.

Going forward you have to rely on a bullpen staff who have never served in the bullpen much less done so in the playoffs. Now that’s entertainment

What’s up with Muncy? There is the Druff theory about Muncy and Dodger offensive success.

From the MLB website. ”Dodgers — undeniably the team of the century so far”

    :

The Dodgers are in fact the 90’s Braves. The 90’s Braves are regarded as a benchmark for underachievement in the playoffs. If they repeat we can have a different conversation. Team of the century ….

I got confused by your post until I realized you meant that the Dodgers are +140 to win tomorrow if you took that series sweep bet you suggested.

Obviously big value now, given that Yamamoto is -250.

Of course, that +140 was essentially the parlay of the first two games.

When I'm in the stadium in seats where I got a really good deal, I like to point out to Benjamin where we'd be sitting if I purchased Dodgers seats like the average Joe, for the same money.

It's a Jewish lesson. You learn that value is king, and that the lowest price item, seat, or service isn't necessarily the best value. The true victory comes from getting the same thing for much cheaper.

At least the people last night got their money's worth regarding drama. I was thinking at first, "It's nice for them to see all the home runs and the Dodgers crushing it, but the game is probably boring for that reason."

The Dodger bullpen makes sure no game is boring.

    Parlaying -200 game 1 & -250 (-287 now) game 2 = +110

    We got +140

You’re good with StubHub and I have a flair for the Dodgers

A topical and fun Ratto blurb.

The very best thing about this baseball season is that every team is profoundly flawed, sufficiently so that none has a legitimate and easily defended chance to win. It was the Detroit Tigers before their wheels came off after three of their players celebrated hits by doing Donald Trump's stupid little dance. It seems like it should be the Milwaukee Brewers, until you look at their power numbers. It was the Toronto Blue Jays, until gravity set in. The Marlins were in the playoff race until last Thursday, for the sake of the gods. Whoever wins this will qualify as a surprise winner, because no team has any reason to believe it should be them, other than the mandated and entirely inner-directed confidence athletes must have to avoid becoming baristas.

Except, of course, the Los Angeles Dodgers. Their expectations are based on their most recent success, the duration of absurd expectations and money spent, and a roster with more recognizable names on it than any other in the sport. They have exceeded the league's $241 million tax threshold by an amount that is greater than the 26-man payrolls of 25 other teams, and 16 total team payrolls. They've gone all in in the one way owners understand, and also in the one way that makes owners impatient, meddlesome, and unforgiving. They've kicked in with the zeal of an emirate, and so expect emirate results forever.

And that means one thing above all others: The manager is in trouble.

This makes no sense in the case of the Dodgers, of course, for all the obvious reasons. Dave Roberts has been in place for a decade now, and has the best winning percentage of any manager in big-league history; the only four with higher percentages were Negro League managers. His teams have won their division every year but one, and in that season they won 106 games. He has two titles, albeit one from the memory-holed COVID year, and has never had an issue with any important player that has lingered beyond the moment. Roberts is also 53 years old, and has proven malleable and amenable to the ways that Andrew Friedman has run the club. By any sensible measure, he should last another 15 years in the job, health and ownership stability permitting.

Ah, but that's old-folks thinking. This year's Dodgers assembled their poorest record (93-69) with their highest payroll, went all in on the Shohei-will-save-us strategy, used eight more pitchers than the Colorado Rockies, and barely held off the power-deficient San Diego Padres for the NL West title. They have only one other regular, first baseman Freddie Freeman, whose season output matches his 2024 production; their bullpen, which was key to their World Series win last year, has been plainly shambolic. In a playoff bracket with no clear favorite, they are simply one of many—Cleveland at three-and-a-half times the cost.

That's where Roberts really could be in trouble: if the Dodgers don't get three-and-a-half-times-the-cost results. These are lousy times for coaching tenure, as American teams of all types adopt the patience levels of their European soccer brethren and sistren. Every day is a new referendum, coaches are a dime a gross, and blame is mostly a matter of assignment rather than absorption.

This means that if the Dodgers turn out to be no better than the Seattle Mariners or Chicago Cubs or, worst of all in regional terms, San Diego Padres, someone will have to pay for that, and it won't be Tommy Edman, Michael Conforto, or Charley Steiner. Well, it might be Edman and Conforto. But it may also be Roberts, if only because the Dodgers, who have made far fewer managerial changes in the last 70 years than any other team in any other league, will need to justify all that money spent. It would be a silly thing to do, but many stupider things have happened—on something like an hourly basis, now, and not just in Denver. - Ray Ratto

That damn 8th inning is scary for us Dodgers fans, no matter how much we are leading.

    Fun game.

Even the 8th inning drama, while stressful, made the whole thing more exciting. The offense has been so good lately that I didn't at all sweat the early 2-0 deficit. Teoscar's defense... ugh. At least he redeemed himself with a big hit.

I don't know why Sheehan was left in to flail after the minimum 3 batters. Was super clear that he didn't have it. It took until the middle of the AB with Will Benson for Roberts to wake up and say, "Hey, maybe someone else should be pitching here."

Vesia got the K done there, then gave up a dreadful walk to Matt MacLain (he of the .643 OPS), but got a capable hitter in Friedl to mercifully end the inning.

Sasaki crushed it in the 9th. I think we might have our new postseason closer.

You know what wasn't fun, though?

    The parking.

Once again, the Dodgers made the odd decision to shut down exits of certain lots, and I was stuck sitting in my car for an hour. It's one thing if stadium traffic slows you down. It's another thing if they're artificially inducing it by not letting you leave.

    Brutal.

I wanted preferred parking, but it had been sold out since the time I bought my tickets to the game.

Poor Injuns. Such an epic run to the AL Central title, and then they lose like this to the team they supplanted.

    Ugly.

Horrible strike 3 call in 9th somewhat taints the Cubs victory over the Padres. Lousy way to end. Keller had little control at that point. Had that been a walk instead of a K, the inning could've played out differently.

Anyway, Reds, Padres, and Injuns all gone.

    Very tough one to handicap.

Sanlmar was correct about the Reds being no match for the Dodgers, especially on the road, and double especially facing a hot Snell and Yamamoto. Obvious sweep was obvious.

Phillies are a high quality team with both strong starting pitching (even minus Wheeler) and some dangerous hitters in the lineup.

Philadelphia is a very tough stadium to play in during the postseason.

On the other hand, Dodgers still have the better lineup (even sans Will Smith), and Phillies have had the same longstanding postseason issues as the Dodgers in recent years.

Maybe look at the first 5 innings under, as Ohtani and Sanchez are both pitching very well, and I could see a low scoring game in the early goings. But don't fire on this because I haven't examined it much.

    I really don’t have anything.

    Some notes:

Ohtani has pitched 6 innings once in 2025. Dodgers MUST get length from him. 5 innings will not do. This is an experiment

Ohtani is less elite on the road. Philly is a top tier fan base. They are intimidating

Roki has 2 relief appearance for 2 innings in 2025. He is portrayed as “The Solution” to the woeful bullpen. This is an experiment. He must promise not to cry.

How Roki and Ohtani (6-7 innings Ohtani) recover is the $64,000 question. 164 games wasn’t enough time for Dodgers to figure their shit out.

Sheehan out of pen was dreadful against the woeful Reds offense last round yet he is “The Other Bullpen Solution”. This is an experiment

The bullpen is otherwise a bottom 10 in the last month.

Glasnow and Kershaw’s are bullpen options too. Another untested experiment.

I want Ohtani to carry this sad ass Dodger team to victory in the World Series and cement himself as The GOAT. I want to be witness to the best that ever was. Playoff home runs and shutouts. The worse the Dodgers play the better Shohei’s narrative.

This will be a fascinating contest. It’s really the World Series come early. It’s a live wagering game if anything.

If you want a bet…. Mariners to win first game/Mariners to win series +100

    I was just thinking that.

The Dodgers had a long season to figure out a closer, and they "discovered" their closer in the final inning of game #164. From 11 pitches.

    Lord help us.

I still haven't gotten an explanation as to why Sheehan was left in to flail for several batters beyond the minimum 3. It isn't getting enough discussion because the Dodgers ended up winning. Even Ben was outraged.

I saw a stat that Teoscar Hernandez is hitting like .417 against Sanchez with 2 HR. Obviously a very small sample, but this could get into Sanchez's head. Even happens to me in poker. I get stuck in my own head when I am in a hand against someone who always seems to win against me.

I've also seen it discussed that the Dodgers are in a better position this year than last year, as far as winning it all. Last year they had a great bullpen but an almost nonexistent starting rotation. This year the starting rotation is looking excellent, but the bullpen is a disaster. You'd think the latter is better. But Roberts has to cut these guys off after 3 batters if they suck. No lefty/righty nonsense. If the reliever looks crappy, get him out immediately after 3 batters. No exceptions.

I have some Dodgers +550 & +600. It’s just math. They do have a chance at some number. Today will provide an insight into whether this bracket is possible. If Dodgers lose then the gambling will commence. How did they lose? Can I find a way to see things different than the public?

With the Philly line sitting -120 …. if I can get one more rush of Dodger money betting “Hope” not data then I will be compelled to take some Phillies. Ask Ben if he wants a piece of my action.

Sanchez is or was immature. I think of him as a hothead. Not good for Philly. Ohtani was asked if he will feel the emotion of the moment - will there be adrenaline. He admitted there would be.

Both offenses need to not chase pitches outside the zone. Phillies need to get to Dodgers bullpen. No 2 pitch at bats. Parenthetically, Roki is never in the zone. Don’t chase. This narrative lends itself to strikeout overs. It’s like sacrificing a pawn in chess. Gimme a competitive 9 pitch at bat that results in a strikeout and the guys on the bench should give him a hug and an attaboy. Make the pitcher get in the zone.

It's always awkward going as the +1 to a class reunion. You made the right decision.

So far Shohei hasn't pitched or hit well.

Sanchez has been a mixed bag, so Dodgers have a chance. Plus he's throwing a lot of pitches. Middle relief for Phillies is mediocre, but they have a very strong closer. If Dodgers can hold them to 3, they've got a shot.

Teoscar looked awful on that last AB.

    Shohei with the golden sombrero.

    4 AB, 4 K.

Pitched well except that one winning. Dodgers better not blow this 1st and 2nd nobody out, down 3-2 (now one out).

Kike Hernandez with his usual heroics to get the 2 RBI.
