the Hyundai ICE raid situation is fascinating

    - Hyundai spends _billions_ here but still cant get proper visas issued
    - Is forced to bring in their own workers illegally because they literally cant find competent Americans to hire
    - Hyundai gets raided by ICE who essentially tar and feather them by recording it and releasing the video

the sentiment abroad is an acute sense of betrayal and an earnest, common sense pivot to simply not doing business with this country.

at a time when BRICS was being dismissed as a PR stunt by repressive dictators, this administration has elevated them to not just legitimacy, but framed them as the grownups in the room.

it doesnt matter who is elected next, no one wants to deal with the best-case status quo for four years when another race to the bottom can replace it.

the most globally relevant thing America will be doing for the next several generations will be veto'ing UN sanctions against israel and trying to figure out which middle eastern war orphan to drone strike before they can smuggle a DPRK nuke into Atlanta.

Why can't they find competent Americans to make cars? That part is hard to believe.

I do agree that this was a weird raid.

This has been the problem with the ICE raids. They've been haphazard, and have somewhat targeted the harmless illegal immigrants who are otherwise working and keeping their head down.

Had they just restricted these operations to the gang-infested areas and rounded up the young men terrorizing neighborhoods, that would have been a big win for America, and it would be hard for anyone to speak against it. Same with targeting illegals who already had felony convictions but somehow never got deported.

I can't get behind deporting workers from Hyundai.

This wasn’t workers building cars, they were building a future EV battery plant. And Hyundai distanced themselves from actually hiring the workers to avoid liability through temp companies.

This story runs deep and it’s hard to get all the facts but we know this job was low bid and won by counting on cheap non union labor. Americans never had a shot at these jobs that should have been high paying. There are also reports, unverified, that some of the workers were here against their will.

Bottom line is no one looks good here, including the US Government. But it does bring the issue to the forefront of US consumers saying they want good jobs for Americans at fair wages but not wanting to pay the retail prices that requires. So stuff like this happens and I’m still not sure why the Unions were screaming about it before the raid. It took a low level local GOP politician to report it and get the attention that probably caused the raid.

Strongly disagree. Illegal is illegal and the POTUS has to take a firm and complete stand based on the campaign promise. If you keep making little exceptions and turn a blind eye, it shows weak and inconstant leadership.

Just like running this board, there are a different set of rules for different members when they should be set and enforced for all.

not sure exactly what you mean here, could be a bigger thought.

but let's think through the coming default /reduction/ MONEY PRINTING which will be required to cover the soon to be NeVeR EnDiNg social security /medicare payments when the outtake exceeds intake and they spent the trust fund on social programs and wars decades ago...

there may come a point when no one will want to be in charge and have to deal with this impossible mess. nah. just print and distract. bread and circuses and shit.

i havent heard anything, im just shooting from the hip here.

but remember when elon build a solar cell manufacturing plant in buffalo?

tl;dr they got buried in accusations of racism because when the dust settled, they had majority white management constantly at war with majority black workers over things like 'no you cant just walk away from the assembly line to make a phone call' etc etc and they finally said fuck it fine and closed down the entire plant.

i imagine there was a very similar culture dynamic between the korean managers and american workers at the Hyundai plant. just applying occams razor here.

i mean, we all know my opinions on the current incarnation of right wing politics in america. my point here was that the left seems to have absolutely no idea what to do but put bandaids on a broken machine. newsom for example would stabilize the patient but never cure it. and the DS crowd means well but even with their 'tax the rich' based proposals we cant really afford them and they dont seem to be providing any spreadsheets to change my mind.

The intersting thing is that this administration never does anything to all to go after those who employ illegals.

I agree, but I think the main focus is to get the illegals out and the implied thought is- Dont do it again and hire real citizens next.

As for the Hyundai, I assume someone inside tipped off the feds and some of the workers had to know the hammer was falling.

Detained South Korean workers to depart U.S. on Wednesday, Yonhap reports

Published Tue, Sep 9 20259:15 PM EDT
    Reuters

The national flag of South Korea (R) and the company flag of LG flutter in the wind outside one of the LG Group's Twin Tower buildings in Seoul on September 9, 2025. Hundreds of South Koreans were arrested last week at a Hyundai-LG battery plant being built in the southern state of Georgia, with images of workers chained and handcuffed alarming investors, as Seoul issued a strong rebuke.

South Korean workers detained in an immigration raid last week in the U.S. state of Georgia will depart from the U.S. around 2:30 p.m. local time on Wednesday, Yonhap news agency said, citing an unidentified diplomatic source.

South Korea’s foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will meet South Korea’s Foreign Minister Cho Hyun on Wednesday at the White House, the U.S. Department of State said.

South Korea had arranged for a chartered plane to bring back about 300 workers detained in the raid at the site of the $4.3 billion Hyundai Motor
and LG Energy Solution project to build batteries for electric cars.

Before leaving for Washington on Monday, Cho said he planned to work with the U.S. to prevent a repeat of similar incidents and was seeking assurances that Koreans who return home would be allowed to re-enter the U.S..

In a social media post on Sunday, Trump said the U.S. would make it “quickly and legally possible” for foreign companies to bring their staff into the country if they respected U.S. immigration laws.

When asked about the comment and what changes it might signal for the U.S. visa system, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt reiterated Trump’s message and noted that the U.S. government was working on the matter.

“The Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Commerce are working on this matter together,” she told a news conference on Tuesday.

OK first off the workers rounded up were not Hyundai employees they were hired by a third party contractor in GA who did a shitty job on E-verify likely assuming and not questioning them due to idiotic assumptions they had to be legal.

on a side note regarding the nuke. You may not be far off. See the sad reality is kitty litter and low end radiological mostly medical will trip the radiation sensors at the ports no problem. If somebody smuggled in a legit U-235 or P-239 weapons grade core in a lead flask container theres almost no chance of it being caught at the border. My gut always thought a legit weapon with several kiloton yield was more likely going to be the next major terrorist incident vs a dirty bomb which while it could cause problems again radiological detectors would pick up most isotopes likely to be used such as stolen medical grade radioactive material such as Tec-99, Low strength I-131. The main reason alot of stuff less dangerous trips is they have high decay rates with short half lifes.

    1. you don't just do "shitty" jobs verifying the immigration status of hundreds of south koreans.

    2. contractor or not, did Hyundai get all these incentives to hire south koreans or americans to work these jobs.

    3. you are missing the bigger issue here.

    4. carry on.

for anyone interested, this is a very good article emphasizing many of the points i was making about what a fraud this (and likely other) so called investments in bringing foreign companies here at tremendous cost all for "american jobs" which then go back to the company's nation --- illegally at that as those people weren't supposed to be here.

there should be an investigation and serious fines for how that all came about. but there won't be any. carry on.
