I just got banned on Twitter/X for "inauthentic activity"

Less than a month after being monetized on X, I'm now on the other side -- suspended!

    What happened?

Did I go too far in a beef with someone?

Did I post someone's personal info?

    Did I insult Elon?

Did I spam in order to get engagement?

    No, no, no, and no.

I don't know what I actually did. I have always followed the rules there. I was banned for "inauthentic activity", which is unclear, but sounds like botting:

You may not engage in inauthentic activity that undermines the integrity of X.

We want X to be a place where people have authentic experiences. To make that possible, we do not allow any activity that attempts to manipulate our platform or disrupt our services through inauthentic accounts, behaviors or content.

    Inauthentic Accounts

Accounts on X must be authentic. Under this policy, you may not create, operate, or mass-register accounts that are not legitimate, genuine and transparent as to their source, identity, and popularity. This includes:

Unauthorized automation: Automated or scripted accounts that do not comply with our Developer Policy. Please note that as a user you are ultimately responsible for third-party applications you may authorize to access or use your account.

Fake personas: You may not use manufactured identities to engage in disruptive or deceptive behavior. This may include using stock, stolen or AI-generated profile photos, copied or stolen profile bios, and/or misleading profile information for the purpose of deceiving others.

Impersonation: You may not impersonate other identities of individuals, groups, or organizations to deceive others. Although you are not required to display your real identity on your profile, your account should not use false profile information to impersonate others. We allow compliant Parody, Commentary, and Fan (PCF) accounts on X only if the purpose is to discuss, satirize or share information. If you believe an account is posing as you or your brand, you can file a report here.

Multiple Accounts and Coordination: We prohibit coordinated inauthentic activity that artificially influences conversations or disrupts X.

Ban Evasion: You may not circumvent X enforcement actions.

Account Compromise: The unauthorized access or modification of someone’s X account is strictly prohibited.

    Inauthentic Behaviors

You may not engage in behaviors that manipulate X or artificially impact how content is discovered and amplified. This includes:

Content Spam: You may not share or post content in a bulk, duplicative, irrelevant or unsolicited manner that disrupts people's experience.

Engagement Spam: We prohibit inauthentic use of X engagement features to artificially impact traffic or disrupt people’s experience

Scams: You may not use X to engage in scam tactics to obtain money, property, or private information.

    Inauthentic Content

You may not share inauthentic content on X that may deceive people or lead to harm. This includes:

Synthetic and Manipulated Media: You may not share inauthentic media, including, manipulated, or out-of-context media that may result in widespread confusion on public issues, impact public safety, or cause serious harm (“misleading media”). We may use our own technology or receive reports through partnerships with third parties in order to determine if media have been manipulated or presented out of context. In situations where we are unable to reliably determine if it is misleading media, we may not take action.

Malicious URLs: You may not post malicious, harmful, or deceptive links on X that may cause harm. This includes posting links that may damage or disrupt another person’s browser (malware), compromise a person’s privacy (phishing), and deceptive links that redirect people to unexpected destinations or mislead people about the website’s content.

The consequences for violating this policy depend on the severity of the violation as well as any previous history of violations.

I filed an appeal with X through their system.

It is certain (from the email I initially received) that I was suspended by a bot or AI, not a human. However, it's also unlikely a human will read my appeal, so I'm at the mercy of their AI.

Ironically, grok speaks highly of me if you ask it (try it yourself), and states that I have done a lot of good in the poker community regarding stopping frauds and scams. So grok likes me (and it doesn't like everyone), yet that same company's AI just unfairly suspended my account.

What's a little bit concerning is that it is NOT asking me to authenticate or identify myself. So the system seems to believe I'm a real guy, but just that I'm engaging in botting or some other prohibited practice on X. Which I'm not! Sad!

I'm so frustrated right now. X is the site where I spent the most time, aside from PFA.

I know that JeffDime got banned via mysterious circumstances, though they didn't accuse him of "inauthentic behaviors":

I do have an ace in the hole regarding something I can try if I can't get this overturned. Not guaranteed to work, but I might have a small leg up in regards to getting this over to a human being who can look at it.

But it's a favor I'd prefer not to ask for unless necessary.

I've had my X account temporarily frozen, needed to prove I wasn't a bot, think in a day or two it was resolved.

Did it say "inauthentic activity", or did it simply ask you to prove yourself?

Mine did NOT ask me to prove my reality, which concerns me. That makes me think it won't be resolved by a simple ID check or whatever.

I have a way in mind to possibly rectify this if the normal support route fails, but I'll give this appeal a chance to work before I do so.

Laughably, I asked Grok for its advice, and Grok admitted it has zero visibility into X moderation (dumb), and even criticized X's moderation team for being "opaque" and "non-responsive". LOL!

Exact opposite. Interesting admission. Figured you for a Facebook guy

I’m YouTube and ainec. Sipping from a Yeti water bottle and watching YouTube like a 16 year old girl

I wanna short Netflix so bad. Why invest in producing content? I much prefer Google’s model of monetizing those who create content themselves for the platform

You'd be very bored with my Facebook page. I very rarely post there, and when I do, it's not particularly exciting.

I mainly use Facebook for the groups feature, but even there I only participate intermittently.

I really got to like Twitter/X because it's a platform where you're speaking to the general public, whereas on Facebook you're speaking only to people who specifically friended you. Big difference.

I've tried to figure out what possibly could have given the X moderation AI the impression that I'm a bot.

I still have no idea, but I have a few possible theories:

    1) About 36 hours ago, I reposted the story about my August 2, 1990 appearance in the LA Times. I posted this because it was the 35-year anniversary of the article, and the story behind it was entertaining (and not well known among my Twitter followers). If you recall, it's the story about Fidelity Investments advertising their then-new "investment hotline" with the identical phone number to mine, but with an 800 area code. When they inexplicably printed the "800" part small, I was inundated with calls from people in LA trying to reach Fidelity, and my phone became unusable. I got them back by putting up an answering machine message stating, "You've reached Fidelity Investments. Due to unforeseen circumstances, we have moved our headquarters to South America, and your funds are temporarily unavailable. We have no further information for you at this time." Fidelity freaked the fuck out, took out another full page LA Times ad, and they changed the phone number completely, this time printing the 800 area code in an especially large font. The LA Times did a short article about the incident, which printed on August 2, 1990. (Fidelity wasn't named in the article, presumably to not ruin the advertising relationship they had!)

Anyway, I shared my 1990 phone number in the X post, and perhaps the bot thought I was posting someone's personal info. However, it's notable that the suspension email did NOT mention a doxxing violation, but instead simply claimed that I was engaging in "inauthentic activity".

    2) I was asked for help by a radio listener who claims to have gotten screwed by Coin Poker, so I went to Coin Poker's X account and replied to two different tweets, with a link to the guy's tweet complaining about them. This may have been confused for spam by the X moderation system. However, it's important to note that I only did this twice, so could that have really triggered it?

    3) Due to noticing that original tweets have far more reach than replies (this is even true for huge accounts like Mr. Beast), I have sometimes been replying to a tweet, and then would later repost that same reply as a quote-tweet. However, I would only do this occasionally.

    4) Up until recently, I was barely interacting with any large influencers, as I found it to be a waste of time, since they are unlikely to read anything I write. However, some of them have annoyed me to the point where I finally felt I had to say something. Some of these got a decent number of likes and responses. Interestingly enough, I've done this far more to right-wing influencers than ones on the left. It is possible I pissed one off enough to where they pulled some strings at X to get me suspended. However, I should note that I did not aggressively go after any one particular influencer, nor have I done this very often. My criticisms were also not threatening in any way, nor was I doxxing anyone or posting anything overly provocative. Also, my ban is for "inauthentic activity", not any form of harassment or speech.

How many twitter accounts do you have? this can occur if your ip is tied to too many. Seems unlikely though if they left the other ones

I'm thinking it is posting the phone number that got you banned.

Also, it's funny that you, a real person got banned when there are so many easily identifiable bots that operate on twitter with immunity.

95% of my likes on twitter are from bots with drop dead gorgeous PFPs that love Trump, traveling, and golf.

Without bots, there would be no user growth on twitter.
