some pretty wild shit is going down in the UK re internet / porn / privacy / age verification (UK Online Safety Act)

i dont have a lot of verified details because everyone seems to have a different doomtake on it but

    apparently

you want porn? youre going to be submitting KYC style verification to get it.

"instead of self-reported age checkboxes that allow anyone to say they are 18 or older, viewers will have to submit identification documents, age-estimating face scans, and bank documents such as credit card checks."

"If websites fail to put in the age checks, they can be fined up to £18 million (€20 million) or 10 per cent of their global revenue."

im also hearing weird murmurs about how VPN use will also be in the crosshairs.

and that this is quite probably going to end up moving way beyond the UK to the rest of europe.

my gut read is this has nothing to do with porn, and is a step towards de-anonymizing the internet.

I discussed the Online Safety Act of March 2025 here: https://pokerfraudalert.com/forum/sh...about-hamsters

If PFA were based in UK (or if the site were directed primarily at UK users, which of course it isn't), I would be affected by this as well.

UK has never been a free speech country, despite beliefs to the contrary.

Yes age verification for all the major sites has now been enforced but simply using a VPN bypasses it completely and everyone knows it. This is just part of a huge build-up of political pressure against Keir Starmer and the Labour government which is surprising considering Labour won the election last July with a large majority. I don't remember an elected prime minister becoming this unpopular so quickly. Starmer has less charisma then a waxwork dummy but was perceived to be sensible and moderate. He's now demonstrated that he's completely out of touch with what the public actually care about and a dangerous authoritarian who won't even listen to advice from his own side.

It is all good. It's not based on the cult of religion, wealth or political power.

It's ground up. The majority demands greater accountability? That's it then.

Freedom of speech is not an immunity clause.
    Check out your local court.
Lies and aspersions are not protected.

    British Law gets it.

They want everything one posts online to be directly tied to a confirmed identity, and they want access to this data. It's become cliche to cite Orwell, but the UK government clearly wants to punish anything they consider "wrongthink", "crimethink", or a "thoughtcrime". With the advent of AI they will be able to easily identify not just individuals, but any groups of individuals that collectively pose any kind of "threat" to the censorship regime, and snuff them out before it ever gets started. I'm sure you've all noticed that Apple actively indexes words in your pictures, this means the UK government can actively identify the ideas and thoughts one have by the things you are screenshotting without ever posting them - Apple was ordered to give them access to all of this too, and it looks like they already caved in by not offering UK citizens the same encryption everyone else has.

But yes team libtardia, continue to support the people who are only in the earlier stages of the same plan for us all. I'm sure that will work out well.

Typical. Everything you said here are lies, half-truths, and general libtard, contextomy and race baiting bullshit - the left cannot make an honest argument about anything anymore. The things happening in the UK are facts. For fuck's sake, you started the thread.

none of your pearl clutching is about your rights, its about losing the fake world youve created to compete for relevance and influence with people who matter.

the internet hasnt been anonymous since the 90s. the UK stuff interests me because, and this is why i made the thread, the pretext of pornography is once again being trotted out to justify de-anonymizing content and once again they are doing a shitty job of it instead of just fast forwarding to the inevitable conclusion of this grand experiment.

im sorry you never got to see obamas african birth certificate but im less sorry that in your lifetime, people will be held accountable for undermining democracy and/or engaging in collective cult hysteria about immigrants, stolen elections, and pizza parlor sex dungeons.

and yes, i can see why that undermines your sense of self. but dont worry, youve still got pfa to rail against how its all a woke conspiracy.

Grand experiment check. Referred by some as the golden shower years.
What a shame that a broad band means of communication offering anonymity is abused by undesirables. We deal with accountability every time we jump in car, enter a place of business or find ourselves in a Pavement Tour Revival audience.

Restrictive gun policies including registration and background checks may be inconvenient but serve the majority, public safety.

How do you respond? Your forum cred is shakier than ever.

I honestly only skimmed this, I rarely read your posts at all, but everything I did read is just more embarrassing, baseless takes. No one is denying that the internet isn't actually anonymous, but for the local, state, and federal governments to actually go digging typically requires some level of probable cause. I know you are smart enough, just barely, to realize that if one had access to all data from a site like X and every person's actual identity was tied to it, compiling a database of keywords/phrases and memes and the text in them that anyone decided were problematic by the individual who posted them would be extremely easy. That is what they are doing and are going to take to an entirely new level. You have no problem with this or at least you're pretending not to because of politics, but you definitely will when someone decides something you think is problematic is in charge.

So for the record guys Sonatine is totally for mass government surveillance because he's convinced it will only be used to own those who he has political differences with. The 40 year younger, 200lb lighter version of yourself is someone out there crying, Stasitine.

The wolf guarding the hen house

describes a situation where someone untrustworthy or likely to cause harm is put in charge of something they could easily exploit or damage. It highlights the potential for abuse of power or responsibility when someone with conflicting interests is placed in a position of authority

It does not consider an age where an anonymous individual has access to untold unsuspecting contacts.

    Retarded AI? Possible investment.
No we are talking about proposed legislation in a foreign land addressing criminal activity of the worst kind. Horrible, that an effort aimed at public safety is not your cup of tea. The big reveal is no body outside your little fanboy cult country cares. You are a dying breed.

Can we just re-read the thread title. The UK Online Safety Act.
It is subtle. Props to the Brits.

Not so subtle is a President who challenges the law of a nation and the equal authorities provided to Congress and the Department of Justice.

One elected POS dares to denounce the rule of law, the will of the people. Literally breaking the laws set by Congress and disregarding/delaying judgements brought from the court of law.

And dufuss follower has the nerve to weigh in on public policy elsewhere.
