Jew Make the Call: Guess the Ending to this 1989 "Druff Meets Girl Through Traffic School" Story

This thread contains a story from my life from 35 years ago. I'm going to let you guess the ending, and after a few days, I'll reveal which one of the endings actually occurred. Please vote for the ending you believe actually happened. If you think the entire story is fabricated, pick that choice. The only thing I'm promising is that only ONE of the options in the poll is the correct one.

    -----------------------------

In September 1989, at the age of 17, I was in traffic school due to a speeding ticket I had received. This was a juvenile traffic school, meaning everyone there was either 16 or 17. As you probably know, you can go to traffic school every so often in order to remove the point from your driving record.

My parents gave me a choice of which one to attend. I had heard that this traffic school was "fun" and had zero real work, and was almost like a biweekly party. I chose that one. Unfortunately, unlike the rumors I had heard, it was not fun at all. It was very by-the-book, and quite boring. I later heard that they got in trouble and had almost lost their accreditation, and reformed about 2 months prior to my going there. Damn.

Anyway, we didn't have desks, only chairs. When we had to write something, they handed out clipboards so we had a surface to lean on. On my clipboard there was a clear, fairly large message written in dark, permanent ink:

"Hey guys, my name is Kelli Shanahan. I'm 17, 5'4", long brown hair, 115 pounds, and I love to party! If you'd like to get to know me, call me any time at 374-1065!" (Kelli's name has been changed for this story, and that's not the actual number I saw.)

I figured this was a "Jenny 867-5309" type prank, and wasn't going to call. I figured Kelli wouldn't have actually written this, and if she had, she wasn't likely to have put down her full name.

Still, as I sat there watching the 2 hours slowly tick by, my eyes kept darting back down to the clipboard. Was it possible at all this was real? What if Kelli really WAS a fun girl who just liked to party, and scribbled this on the board during the interminable droning of the instructor? And if it was some sort of prank, when was this done, and how many dudes fell for it?

By the time I left the class for the day, I had decided I was going to call, but was going to politely approach it, as I believed it likely wasn't her.

That evening, I calmly picked up my white, corded phone with the glowing green numbers, and dialed 374-1065.

A teenage sounding girl answered the phone.

Phew! I didn't have the awkwardness of reaching an adult, and trying to explain how I knew their daughter.

I asked for Kelli, and she replied, "I'm Kelli. Who are you?"

Okay... now time for the potentially creepy sounding explanation....

"Hi, well... you don't know me, but let me explain. I was at West Torrance Traffic School, and there was this really weird message on the clipboard, containing your name and phone number. It claimed to have been written by you, gave your full name and phone number, and described how you look. It said something about how you love to party, and were inviting anyone to call and get to know you. I'm guessing you didn't write this, but I just wanted to let you know about it."

I felt this was a good opening line -- where I was acting as if I was warning her about this message probably not written by her, and wasn't one of the creeps looking for a good time.

"Oh my God! Seriously, that's on a clipboard there? I'm gonna fucking kill my friend for this...", she replied, though was kind of laughing as she spoke, as if this wasn't a huge deal to her.

"Yeah I figured it wasn't you. I just wanted to let you know. Sorry to bother you. I was just really bored at the traffic school and kept staring at this, and I figured I should probably call and tell you about it."

"That's cool, dude. I appreciate you calling to tell me. But you know, me and my friends are kinda crazy, we play little pranks on each other all the time. I know exactly who did it, and yeah she got me pretty good there! I gotta find a way to get her back even worse now! <laughs>"

"Well, I mean it could have been worse. All she said is that you like to party and want to meet new people", I replied.

"Yeah totally, it coulda been much worse. But this is bad enough and now I'm gonna get that bitch back! I just gotta think of what to do!"

I expected the call to end shortly after that, but it didn't. We kept talking. We told each other about ourselves. I asked if the physical description of her on the clipboard was accurate, and she said it was. I described myself, and told her I was also 17. It turned out that she had also attended that traffic school, about two weeks before I did, and her friend wrote that little note at that time, hoping she'd get the clipboard during one of the remaining classes and flip out. She never ended up getting it, and I guess nobody had the balls to call her until I did that night.

We both lamented how we had heard the traffic school was a fun one, but how we ended up with the reformed, boring version.

She went to one of the beach cities high schools, about 15 miles from where I lived. We were both beginning our senior year.

Kelli didn't seem particularly intelligent, and came off kind of like a stereotypical airheaded beach chick. But there was something fun and laid back about her demeanor, and I enjoyed talking to her, despite our very different personalities and interests. At the end of the first call, which probably lasted an hour, she remarked, "Well like, I'm glad you called, and thank you for telling me about what my friend did. And if you'd like to call me again, I'd like that too."

Very encouraging! I had no idea what Kelli looked like, but from the way she described her life, I pictured she had to be at least fairly pretty, and it seemed like she had truly enjoyed talking to me. I was definitely calling back.

The next day I called Kelli, and we picked up where we left off. Again, we talked for about an hour. The conversation never went to anything sexual, nor did we discuss dating. I did slip in at one point that I was single, and she also mentioned that she didn't have a boyfriend. I wasn't going to attempt to ask to meet her in person until we got a little closer.

I was calling her every day for the next week or so. We talked about an hour per day. There was no deep, marathon conversation, but we were consistently talking daily, and she seemed legitimately happy to hear from me. Still, there was no sign of any attraction on her part. Was I already friendzoned? I was about to get my answer.

After about a week of talking for an hour or so each day, Kelli finally opened up how she was feeling about my calls.

"I've wanted to say something to you, but, like, it's gonna sound weird, and... ummm... I'm embarrassed to say it," she said softly to me, clearly a little bit uncomfortable.

I thought this was a good sign. It sounded like she was about to reveal some feelings she had developed for me, even though we hadn't met yet, nor even discussed meeting.

"Tell me," I replied. "You don't have to be embarrassed. Maybe it's not as weird as you think it is."

"Okay, uhh....", she hesitatingly answered, "I've like, kinda been thinking about you a lot. Like, a whole lot. Like, it's getting to where the whole day I can't wait for the phone to ring and for it to be you. I hope I'm not scaring you."

"No! You're not scaring me at all," I enthusiastically replied. "I really love talking to you, too. Every day at school, I can't wait to get home and call you. It's become like a regular part of my day now. And then I think to myself, 'I wouldn't even know this girl if her friend didn't write her number on a clipboard as a prank!' Strange how these things turn out."

"Yeah! So weird," she replied. "Anyone else who called would've probably scared me, but like, you were so easy to talk to, so comfortable. It almost felt like I knew you already, ya know? And... well, you're different. You're different from anyone I've ever known."

"How am I different?", I inquired.

"It's hard to explain. Like, you're smart, you're deep, you're mature. I know you said you're 17 but I would swear you're not because I don't know any 17-year-olds like you. But I mean that in a good way. Like, I don't think you're lying about being 17, I just think you're different, in a good way. The guys I know, they're all... ummm... I don't know, kinda stupid. And that's not being mean, like, I know I'm kinda stupid too. But I love talking to you. I feel like I get smarter each time we talk. It's really cool. I just can't stop thinking about you. Sorry, I'll stop."

This was exactly what I was hoping to hear! At this point I felt comfortable suggesting we meet in person, and told her we should meet at a shopping center right next door to where I worked (which happened to be in her city), and then go somewhere else. We set the date of Friday at 6pm to do this (it was a Wednesday as we made the plans), so neither of us had to worry about our parents hassling us about school being the next day. She seemed thrilled to do this, and I was thanking the dear Lord that I had randomly received that fateful clipboard.

The next day, Thursday, I decided to do a bit of detective work. I went down to her high school right before work, which was after all the students had gone home, but the library was still open. I found the prior year's yearbook, and looked her up. To my delight, she was really hot! I knew she wasn't likely to be ugly, but she was one of the prettiest girls in that entire junior class. I even got to see a full body picture of her in some club photo. This made me even more excited to meet her, but also more nervous. Would I be good looking enough for her? What was she really expecting of me? What if we met and she decided she's out of my league? I decided to do a bit more work on this during or final night of calls prior to meeting.

That night, I called her, and of course mentioned nothing about looking her up in the yearbook. After we talked for about 15 minutes, I said, "You know, we have no idea what each other look like. We've described ourselves, but that doesn't tell a lot. I'm just wondering... what are you expecting to see when I show up tomorrow? I'm just curious."

I was hoping she wasn't going to say she was expecting a really hot guy. I wasn't ugly, and I had already dated some girls who definitely found me attractive, but I was wondering if perhaps her imagination got carried away, and she was expecting something I could never match. Remember, this was 1989, and most people never met blind over the phone like this, especially at age 17.

"I didn't really think of how you look," she answered. "Like, I'm serious. I don't even care. That's not why I like you. I just love talking to you. I love how you think. You fascinate me so much. I just want to meet you, not to see what you look like, but to just finally meet this cool guy I've been talking to."

Okay... good answer. It sounded sincere. Though I got a little bit of a shallow vibe from our earlier conversations, that vibe seemed to have faded as I got to know her over the prior 10 days. And to be fair, she had never told me any stories of any guys she rejected for their looks. Honestly, it seemed like she was used to hanging out with a bunch of rockheaded beach types, and I was so much a departure from that to where she found it intriguing and attractive. But I didn't want to make it sound like I was nervous or lacking self-esteem!

"Oh okay, I was just wondering," I said back. "I'm not an ugly guy or anything, and I was telling you the truth about how I looked when I described myself. I just wanted to know what you were picturing, that's all. I'm really looking forward to tomorrow. I can't wait to finally spend time with you in person!"

"I know! Time is moving so slow now! I'm like... I can't believe I have to go through a whole school day and then wait 3 more hours til I see you. Seems like it will feel like 10 years! But it will all be worth it when it finally happens!"

I was ready. One more day, and I'd find out if Kelli was really as "fun" as the clipboard purported her to be.

The next day, I got off work at 5:30. I had half an hour to kill before meeting her, by design. I went to my car and changed my shirt to the one I felt looked best on me. I made sure my hair looked decent. I looked myself in the mirror, then strolled next door to the meeting spot.

We had agreed to meet in front of the pay phones at the supermarket, and then go somewhere else. I chose this place because it was next door to my work (though I didn't tell her this), and it was very easy to find.

I was afraid to just stand there by the pay phones, because I didn't want her showing up just to take a look at me from the car, and ditch out if she didn't like what she saw. Instead, I hung out in my car (which I hadn't described to her), which I had strategically parked in good view of the entire lot. I would be able to see who drove in, and then who approached the pay phones. As soon as I'd see her walking over, I'd get out and walk there myself, as if I had just arrived. In reality, I was there 20 minutes early to do this, making sure I got there first.

In the next 5 posts, I am going to post 5 different endings to the story. Pick the one you think is real. If you don't believe any of them occurred, then select the option in the poll that the entire story is fake.

At 6:05pm, I saw a girl who matched Kelli's description drive into the lot. She found a parking spot, sat there for about 2 minutes (maybe checking her makeup?), and then got out and gingerly walked toward the payphones.

I popped out of my car and approached them, as well. It was her, and she was even hotter than what I saw in the yearbook.

"Kelli?", I said to her, pretending I hadn't already seen her photo.

"Hey! I was worried I was late and you left already! Especially when I didn't see anyone at the phones!"

"Oh, yeah, sorry, I was a bit late too. They kept me extra at work. I was hoping the same thing, that you hadn't already left!", I fibbed, not wanting to explain my real plan regarding hiding until she showed up.

"Well, it's good to finally meet you," she said, seeming sort of nervous and uneasy.

We then made small talk for about 10 minutes. It just didn't seem to flow the way it did on the phone. Maybe she was worried about all the stuff she had sad to me over the prior two days. Maybe she really did care about looks, and wasn't attracted to me. Maybe she just was getting cold feet over the entire weird situation. I tried to put it out of my head. We talked about 5 more minutes, and while things didn't really improve, they also didn't get worse, and she didn't seem to be making any excuses to go. I decided to make my move.

"So... feels kinda stupid standing in front of a supermarket. Would you like to go somewhere better, like maybe get something to eat?", I asked, hoping not to get a brutal rejection slammed in my face.

"Oh, well... uhh... I already ate an hour ago, sorry. I thought we were just meeting and, ummm... I didn't really expect dinner or anything."

Uh oh! "Just meeting"?? That didn't sound good.

"Well, that's no problem, I can eat later. We can go anywhere, doesn't have to be dinner. Just somewhere more fun that a supermarket parking lot!", I replied, trying to lead her to realize I was asking her out.

"Yeah, well, umm... I really can't tonight. You see... I have to get back, and... well... uhh... look, I'm sorry. I think I said some stuff on the phone, you know, uhh... the whole thing was strange, I thought certain things, but I'm not ready, y'know?"

That seemed to be 1989 Beach Girl speak for, "I'm not into you."

"Yeah, I know," I replied. "No problem. Nice meeting you. I'll let you get back", I said curtly, turned around, got in my car, and made the drive of shame back home.

Sadly I had stupidly told my friends about this meetup, how hot the girl was, and how optimistic I was. Now I had to go home and admit failure. I decided that would wait another day. "I wish Miami Vice was still on Fridays, sucks it got cancelled", I thought, as I pulled into my parents' driveway, and tried to pretend to them that nothing was bothering me that evening.

At 5:55, a girl matching Kelli's description pulled into the lot, got out of the car, and sauntered over to the payphones. I got out of my car and walked to her.

"Todd? Is that you?", she asked, as I approached.

"Who?", I replied, feigning she had embarrassed herself in front of some random dude. "I'm sorry, but you have the wrong.... nah, just kidding. Yeah, it's me!"

"Oh my God! You asshole!", she shouted, while laughing. "My heart jumped out of my chest when I thought I asked some random guy if he was you. Don't do that to me! You're just like my friends, always fucking with my head!"

In an odd way, this seemed like a good icebreaker and a good start.

"Well, glad we both got here early, so nobody thought the other got cold feet!", I said.

"Well that wasn't gonna be me! I was looking forward to this for the last 2 days. Like, even if my house was burning down, I was showing up here!"

Okay... good sign right there. She was still acknowledging having looked forward to this, now having met me in person.

"Well I wasn't going to miss it either. Unless my house burnt down. Then I can't make any promises", I shot back.

"Okay, yeah, stupid example!", she said while laughing. "I'm just a little nervous, I haven't done anything like this before. I know you have, with your party lines or whatever you call. You're like a pro at this, I'm not."

"Well I was nervous too. You talk on the phone, you never know how it's going to go in person, so you always wonder until it actually happens," I said, hoping to fish for a little more of her reaction to me.

"Well I haven't run away screaming so, like, that's a good sign for you! <laughs>"

"Hey, I've got an idea", I proposed, sensing things were going well so far, "Instead of standing in front of phones at a supermarket, how about we go get something to eat?"

"Yeah! I'm starving, I haven't had anything all day. My stomach was in knots about this meeting, but it's starting to untie."

We ended up going to a local cafe, had a great conversation, and then moved down to the beach to take a walk and hang out (I know, very cliche).

Eventually we ended up back in my car, made out for awhile, and I got her top off, but I stopped there, not wanting to look like the pervert who would call a girl's number from a clipboard. On the third date, we had sex, this time in her car. She was the second girl I had sex with in my life.

I was very optimistic about my relationship with Kelli, but in October, she abruptly dropped a bomb on me.

"I'm moving to Utah", she said. "I can't fucking believe it. My dad, he didn't want to tell me until a week before, because he didn't want me to freak out."

We attempted to make it work long distance, but mutually lost interest very quickly. It just wasn't the same when we couldn't physically see one another anymore, especially at the age of 17, when you feel like you have the whole world ahead of you. We never even officially broke up. We just stopped calling each other completely by November, and I've never heard from her since. Last week, I looked her up on Facebook for the first time in about 10 years, and was surprised to see that she became a grandmother in 2023. Time marches on.

I sat patiently watching the lot and the phones since 5:40, but nobody matching Kelli's description or picture drove or walked into the area. It was now 6:10, and I figured I had been stood up.

Then, I saw a figure approaching the pay phones, but there was no way it could be Kelli. The girl looked around my age, but she was about 5'8" (not 5'4" as Kelli claimed to be), and had to be at least 250 pounds, maybe more.

"This must be a coincidence, just a different girl my age needing to use the payphone," I said to myself.

But the girl didn't use the phone. She stood there and looked around, as if she were trying to find me.

How could this be? I saw pictures of Kelli in the yearbook! One of the pictures was taken in April 1989. This was October 1989. There's no possible way she could have gained nearly 150 pounds in 6 months.

I decided I had to get out of the car and figure it out.

I walked up to the pay phone, and sure enough, the girl asked, "Todd? Is that you?"

    "Um... yes... are you Kelli?"

"Well, no, my name is Cynthia," she replied, "But... umm... I'm the one you've been talking to."

"I don't understand. What happened to Kelli?!", I asked, still shocked at what I was seeing and hearing.

"Okay, promise you won't get mad", she concernedly said back, which of course meant that she'd be saying something likely to anger me.

"Well... I can't totally promise that, but just tell me. Tell me the truth. What is going on here?"

"Okay, look, I'm sorry, I, umm...", she stammered. "I did something fucked up. You don't deserve it. I almost didn't come at all, but I made myself. I had to tell you the truth. I wrote that thing on the clipboard. Except I'm not Kelli. She's a real girl who goes to my school, and I kinda wished I was her. She was there, too, at the traffic school. I was jealous of her. I wrote out that whole thing but then realized I didn't have her number, so I just put mine. I don't know why. Then I wished I didn't do it, but then nobody called for awhile so I thought maybe the traffic school found it and took away that clipboard, but then you called. And then I liked talking to you so I just went with it. I'm not even an airhead like Kelli, I just played the part so you'd believe it. But I was serious that I do like you. That's why I felt so bad. That's why I came here."

Kinda psycho, to be honest. But in addition to being psycho, I just wasn't attracted to Cynthia. As you guys know, it has never bothered me if a girl has some extra pounds, but even I had my limits. Cynthia was way over those limits, and I just wasn't physically into her. In addition, the whole thing was a huge red flag. It sounded like Kelli hadn't even done anything to her, but Cynthia just decided like a weirdo to live some fantasy phone life pretending to be her. Bizarre.

At the same time, this girl clearly had problems, so I didn't want to compound them.

"I understand," I said. "I see how this got out of control. And you know, I've done some stupid things myself that I've regretted, too. It took a lot for you to show up here and tell me all of that. You could've easily just no-showed and I wouldn't have ever guessed it."

"I almost didn't come. That's why I was late. At the last second, I thought, I just can't do this to you."

"Well thanks for coming and being honest," I said. Then we talked for about 10 more minutes, and I was looking for a natural point to end the conversation and bounce, without it seeming too abrupt or rude. But I didn't have to.

"Well, it was nice meeting you. You really are a very interesting guy. But I'm sure I'm not your type, and if I'm gonna be honest, you're not mine either. So anyway, now you know, and I hope I didn't ruin your night too bad."

I didn't bother to inquire why I wasn't her type.

Now I had one more order of business. I had to confess this embarrassing situation to my friends. After she walked away and drove off, I walked back to the pay phone and called one of them.

"Hey Eddie... you're not gonna believe what just happened..."

I started to get increasingly nervous, as it moved from 5:40 toward 6:00. Was Kelli going to like me? Was I going to impress her as much in person as I had on the phone? What was she really expecting of me?

I obsessively looked at every car driving into the lot, which had only one entrance/exit, a driveway off Pacific Coast Highway.

But every car driving in clearly didn't have a girl Kelli's age. It was mostly older women driving in to do their shopping. A few men drove in, as well. Not a single one of them could have possibly been Kelli.

I also scanned the lot, and not a single teenager strolled into the area. It was now 6:05, and I got the funny feeling that Kelli was standing me up.

I was tempted to go the pay phones and wait. Maybe she was there early, like me. Maybe she was also waiting to see who would approach the pay phones. After all, for all she said she liked me, I was still a stranger from the phone. Perhaps she was a bit scared. What if I was a rapist or murderer? What if I wasn't really 17? Even she had remarked that I seemed older.

I decided to keep my eye keenly on the exit, to make sure nobody was driving out who might meet her description. But indeed, everyone driving in or out of the lot was nowhere near Kelli's age. It was now 6:25, and I knew that I had been had.

At this point, I did one walk around the parking lot, to make sure nobody was sitting in their car. I saw one person, but it was a dude by himself, and he wasn't paying attention to who was around. He clearly had nothing to do with this.

Finally, at 6:30. I went to the payphone. Maybe she got confused regarding the meetup time?

I got her answering machine. I said, "Hey, it's Todd. I've been here since before 6, and you never showed up. Or if you did, somehow I missed you. Anyway, no matter what happened, just give me a call and we will figure this out, and plan to do it again."

The entire night passed, and no call. Out of curiosity, I called her, and nobody answered. Remember, there was no caller ID in those days, so she had no idea if it was me calling or not.

The entire next day, she also didn't answer the phone, nor did she call me back.

Finally, on Sunday afternoon, I reached her. When she answered, I said, "Hey, it's Todd. What happened on Friday? Where have you been? I've been trying to get a hold of you."

She replied, "Fuck off", and hung up on me.

I called back. She answered again. I asked, "What's going on here? What did I do? I showed up as we agreed, and you weren't there. Why did you just tell me to fuck off?"

"Because I want you to fuck off," she replied. "Now don't call me again", and hung up.

I couldn't just let this go. Too strange. What did I do to deserve this???

I called back one more time. She answered and screamed, "STOP CALLING ME, ASSHOLE!!", and hung up.

    I gave up.

To this day I have no fucking clue what happened.

    Ending #5

At 6:00 sharp, a girl who looked just like Kelli's photo promptly walked to the payphone.

I got out of my car and approached.

"Todd, right?", she said, in almost a businesslike fashion.

"Yeah, and let me guess... you must be... let me think...ummm.... Kelli?"

"Yeah, I'm Kelli", she said, not even cracking a smile. Uh oh! But maybe she was just nervous? At least she showed up!

"Well, I'm glad we're getting to meet," I said, trying to lighten the mood. "All those phone calls we had, and I was always trying to picture the girl on the other end, and now I finally get to..."

"I've gotta tell you something," she said, again with a stone face.

"Okay, what is it?", I asked, getting concerned something was deeply wrong.

"This was a joke. The whole thing, it was a cruel joke. I'm really sorry. It wasn't supposed to go this far," she said.

"What do you mean? I know the clipboard thing was a joke on you, and...", I responded, before she interrupted.

"No, not a joke on me. It was a joke on YOU," she clarified. "Well, not you personally, but on whoever was going to call. Me and my friend wrote that on there to see which guys would call, and how far we could lead them on. We wrote one clipboard with her name and number, and one with mine. It was like a competition, which one of us could make a guy fall for us faster. And I guess I won, if you wanna call it that."

"What??", I shouted, the anger welling up in my face. "You're telling me you were fucking with me this entire time? Why would you come here to tell me this? Is that part of the joke, too?"

"No, we weren't supposed to meet anyone," she said. "I just let it get out of hand. I feel bad. I'm sorry."

"I can't believe this. So this was you competing with your friend to mess with guys' heads?"

"Kinda, yeah. Feels weird to say out loud but yeah. And the calls she got, it was just a bunch of fucking weirdos trying to get laid. She couldn't really do it. They all said a bunch of gross things to her, and she'd hang up. She got like 3 calls, all the same. I only got you, and it just seemed so easy. I just got caught up in it. I wasn't thinking about how I was hurting you. Today I realized how fucked up it was, like, you're a person, you have feelings. I couldn't just not show up and throw you away. Too mean. Whole thing was mean, I don't know what the fuck is wrong with me."

"So nothing you said was real? All those hours?", I asked, still in shock.

"Well, most of it. Like, I do think you're smart and a nice guy. That's why I came. That's why I'm admitting this. My friend, she said you'd probably kill me and it's just better to vanish on you. I said no I can't do that. So, like, that's it. Again I am very sorry. I'm usually not this much of a bitch."

"So that's it? You came here to tell me you were fucking with my head the entire way?", I asked once more.

"Yep. That's why I came. Well, sorry this happened, I hope you find someone soon. I gotta go," she coldly said, and walked off.

I stood there in shock for about 5 minutes after she walked away. I then called my friend Eddie and told him what happened.

"Let's shut off her [phone] line tomorrow. She won't be able to get it back on til at least Monday", Eddie suggested.

"That actually sounds great right now. You gonna do the honors?", I asked.

"Nah, I want you to do it. Call me at noon tomorrow and let's cut it together on 3-way."

    And the deed was done.

My only request is you don't troll this thread.

I post this sort of thing every so often for the entertainment of the forum. I figured it would be a nice break from all the Trump/Kamala talk.

I'm interested to see who gets it right.

Posting the answer before the poll is actually over. If you haven't voted yet and don't want to see the answer, you still can, and I'll put it in spoilers.

The correct answer was #4 -- the one nobody guessed!

Was disappointing and baffling to my 17-year-old self, because I couldn't explain it. To this day, I don't think she saw me, as it was easy for me to look at the entire lot from where I was sitting, and I was there 20 minutes early. She simply wasn't there. Fortunately I wasn't that down about it, as we hadn't been talking that long, and I had my doubts whether she'd actually like me in person, as we were too different.

My only guess was that she went to the wrong place, thought I no-showed, and then concluded I had been fucking with her. It's also possible her friends told her the whole thing was super weird, and not to meet me. Also possible she just got cold feet with the whole thing. She was very pretty and didn't need to meet weirdo strangers over the phone.

I hadn't thought of this whole thing in many years, but the subject of traffic school came up when I was talking to a friend recently, and it made me think of this whole thing.

Anyway, I thought I'd try something new with a "guess the fully written ending" format. It didn't get much engagement (no replies and not many votes), so I won't do this format again. Probably too long.

    They can't all be winners.

I'll probably recycle this for radio.
