A road tip I want to share.
Recently a friend and I traveled to Vegas and I covered our hotel stay at the Palace Station in another section of PFA. An additional item I wanted to share was her using Apple Maps on her iPhone and plugging into her the onboard screen on her SUV.
Even though I knew how to get there, I just let the phone app play out for the trip. What I learned once we crossed the state line was the apple map app was announcing "Speed Check" (trap) that were coming up and they were actually the NHP in the center divide running radar. The positive part of this, the app was correct about 3 out of 4 times. So I assume the big rig truckers were putting in the updates as they drive.(thank you big rig drivers)
What I know is the Waze Live Traffic app also does this, but I dont use Waze. So my question is- Is there like a mother computer where Apple maps is getting the speed check info from? Is Waze feeding the mother computer this up to date information or are they all tied together.
Either way, the Apple Maps program is standard on the iPhone and I will use this in the future as I travel to Nevada. I also like that the speed check announcement voice will not interfere with the other apps running like Tune In, music, etc.
Quick Google on the topic and read this-
What is a speed check on Apple Maps?
Also a quick note. Speed checks aren't for notifying you police are around, it's designed to have Apple check (according to an article online) the speed of the area to maintain accuracy of speed limits in that area. But we all use it to warn other drivers of speed traps and we should all continue to do so.

I miss Bun Boy in Baker. That is all!

A Baker tow truck driver told me the north bound traffic is drunk and the southbound traffic is pissed off.

Here is the guide I posted last year regarding dodging traffic between Vegas and LA:

In 2001 I had a girlfriend from Victorville. Our relationship ended because she moved out of state. She had already given up her apartment, but as a final farewell on the night before her flight out of California, she booked the "jacuzzi suite" at the Red Roof Inn off I-15.
This was basically a larger room with a weird jacuzzi in the middle, but other than that, it was a decent room. We even used the jacuzzi for a little bit, which thinking back, probably wasn't the best decision.
Fast forward two decades, and it's one of the worst hotels in California.
1.3 stars on Yelp, out of 91 reviews: https://www.yelp.com/biz/red-roof-victorville-3
Then it ceased being a Red Roof in 2020 (maybe because they lost their franchise due to failing to meet standards), and it has gotten no better as the Mariposa Inn: https://www.yelp.com/biz/miraposa-inn-victorville
A lesson to keep your memories of nice/decent hotels very short, as things change quickly.
Wife and I and 2 dogs drove from bay area to Las Vegas October 26,27 so we were on I-15 from Barstow on into LV.
Not much to say. Traffic was light to moderate. There were long stretches where there were more cars in the left lane than the right. It looked like if one driver planted in the left lane, others would just pile up behind him even if the right lane was completely clear.
The check point coming back was open (it's not always) with maybe a <5 minute backup. This was about 10AM on Sunday.
The drive from Bakersfield to Barstow on highway 58 was the most interesting part of the trip, with the Tehahcapi Loop and the borax mines among interesting things to see. We spent the night in Tehachapi, and I have stayed in Mojave on previous trips.
We stopped in Barstow for a dog break, which was a mistake. Yermo, a few miles down the road, would have been much better.
We'll be going back poribably on Sunday so I'll post if there's anything interesting to say.
Druff- Please tell the Barstow road rage story here.
The three best places to get a bj from your wife/girlfreind in the car on the way to Vegas: 3. Cima Road West to Excelsior Road - complete privacy; 2. Halloran Summit East - great view; 1. the Barstow Drive-In - cheap and like 5 cars in the place.
Today (11/7)- Power outage…
Great thread. Several stories here- jacuzzi staff infection? That’s number 2 to Bun Boy- seemed like a great place
Speaking of Bun Boy, dont forget the former Bob's Big Boy in Baker...
This is a former Bob's Big Boy that was located in Baker, next door to the World's Tallest Thermometer. It's long gone now though, and the location has turned over at least once or twice since..
