Bottomset - Many times family dysfunction carries through the generations, no matter how hard you strive to change things. I grew up under very bizarre circumstances, and I often think that with a more "normal" childhood, I would have accomplished so much more, and started down a straight path at an earlier age. I was out on my own when I was 13 years old, abandoned and straddled with self esteem issues, no father... years of poverty, neglect and abuse already entrenched in my psyche. In many ways, it's a miracle I was able to pull it together, choose a clean life, get a college degree, and establish a loving, stable environment for my little girl.
I did not "shack up" - on the contrary - I married the father of my child (years later, after he had become a good person). The fact that he's not able to provide right now is regrettable, but I still would not change that decision. It was good for my daughter in ways that transcend financial stability.
As for all the bad luck, much can be attributed to poor planning and dysfunction. Neither of my parents knew how to be parents - and as such they never planned for the disasters that often strike later in life. It fell to me to pick up the pieces, and I did it because it was right. The crash of the housing market I couldn't help, but if I had been a more successful earner much earlier in life, I might have had a better buffer to withstand the crisis.
I am still very hopeful that I can pull myself out of the mire I'm in - I have a strong intellect, an iron will, and a lot of love in me. That should get me through. If not, I'll just hit up Druff for a job once he hits the big time. ;o)
