Jimmy Kimmel removed from ABC after claiming Kirk shooter was MAGA, following FCC pressure

Jimmy Kimmel went on his show and claimed that the GOP/MAGA has hit a "new low" by trying to insist that the Charlie Kirk shooter was "anything but one of their own".

The FCC chair then responded by threatening consequences to ABC for allowing such things, and suddenly Kimmel was fired.

The left is just outright lying about the kid, trying to portray this as MAGA-on-MAGA violence.

It's one thing for a few random lefties on X to be doing it (that's expected), but it's gone more mainstream, as evidenced by what Kimmel did.

I don't support the government pressuring broadcasters to take Kimmel off the air, which is apparently what happened. That's not good.

However, it's important to make the distinction here that Kimmel wasn't taken off for simply being critical of Trump. He was taken off the air for deliberately spreading misinformation about the shooter being MAGA, despite clearly knowing otherwise.

Had the suspension of Kimmel been unrelated to any government pressure, I'd actually support it. These comedians should not be using their platform to outright lie about political issues.

I think Kimmel is just awful. I am certain I never watched an entire show in my life. If his network doesn’t like his performance that’s one thing but GOVERNMENT INVOLVEMENT WAS THE THIRD RAIL. The public applauding the government cancellation is EoT stuff.

Ken's mom called and said he CAN'T CUM?"

The crowd laughed. I felt bad for Ken.

Despite this, Ken still opposes Jimmy's suspension 30 years later.

Some clarification here: Kimmel is NOT cancelled. The show is indefinitely suspended for now.

Someone posted a tweet above about Nexstar Media Group. They are just one of many companies that own ABC affiliate stations around the country. (Sinclair Broadcasting and Gray Television are a couple others that come to mind.)

That tweet only referenced Nexstar stations that were planning on pre-empting Kimmel. I have no idea whether other companies' stations planned on doing the same thing.

With ABC's decision to suspend him though, that's all moot. (at least for the time being.)

I mean, IMO, the other networks can't wait to find a reason to just axe their traditional late night shows. CBS got an easy exit with Colbert, maybe ABC now will as well.

I'm no Harry Hollywood, but these shows just can't be making money anymore from what I've read.

I think if you combine the ratings of all these late night shows together they maybe equal what Letterman got in the late 90's.....when he was losing to Leno. These shows still employ like 100 people. Joe Rogan has more outreach with him and his 3 employees.

I would guess that if you told, I dunno, Sydney Sweeneys agent...."you can go on two of these 3 to promote the next movie; Rogan, Hot Ones, Tonight Show", there would be a chuckle then asking why the tonight show is even an option.

These productions have gotten so bloated, partially due to SAG-AFTRA insistence that each function has to have a separate person working it.

But you can't entirely blame them. There's also bizarrely huge writing teams, which actually make these shows less funny, because it becomes a tyranny of the majority, and a lot of the funny/unique/edgy stuff gets dropped. Oh, and of course all of the writers share basically the same ideology, so you can forget any kind of comedy which gives it equally (or even 20/80) to both sides.

So yeah the costs are huge, and I'd also guess the networks are losing money. I know they were on Colbert.

It's nice to see the ascension of new media like Rogan, not because I'm a fan of his (I'm not), but because entertainment honestly needs a reset, and that includes less bloating/cost.

When it comes down to it, people just want entertaining and/or informative programming which doesn't talk down to them. Elaborate sets, big budget gimmicks, and super-polished production can be nice, but people can do without it. Think of how much you can appreciate a well-made YouTube video by just one dude, even if it's not as polished as what you'd see on TV.

Kimmel was taken off the air, not because of government pressure, but because ABC knew they were going to lose massive advertising dollars. They had to move on it.

It's true that Kimmel's show was likely losing money, so it wasn't a huge loss for ABC to suspend it (and even get rid of it).

However, this was definitely done because the companies involved (ABC and the affiliate-owner Nexstar) were scared of the FCC bringing consequences upon them both presently and down the road. The last thing they wanted was to stir up the hornet's nest with regulators, so it was easier just to bend the knee and suspend Kimmel.

This sets a bad precedent, because we really don't want the government (of either party) directly or indirectly threatening consequences for speech they don't like. That's part of the reason Twitter and Facebook were so censorious of posts regarding COVID or Hunter Biden's laptop. That was awful, and this isn't good either.

ABC definitely has a right to suspend Kimmel if they don't like what he's saying on their platform, and had they done this on their own, I'd have no objection.

Kimmel did blatantly lie. He did knowingly spread misinformation about the Kirk shooter. If ABC simply said, "No, you're not using our platform to do that shit", and suspended him, it would have been 100% justified.

I just don't like how it went down. The suspension happened due to government pressure, and we should never want that.

Lefties on social media are so tilting.

If they said, "People lie on TV all the time, so what Jimmy Kimmel did wasn't a big deal, and the FCC shouldn't have pressed to get him suspended", that would be completely reasonable.

If they said, "Yeah, Jimmy lied, but so does Trump all the time, so it's hypocritical for him to send the FCC to get Jimmy fired for doing the same thing", that would also be completely reasonable.

Instead, we are getting either "Jimmy got suspended by Trump's fascist FCC for telling jokes" or "Jimmy was telling the complete truth, Trump couldn't handle it, and he had him suspended", or "Jimmy is being taken out of context, and didn't mean the shooter was right wing. That's the dishonest spin from MAGA."


I can find almost zero left-leaning people on social media who will admit that Jimmy Kimmel intentionally lied/misled about the shooter's political beliefs. They simply can't accept that longtime whiny lefty Kimmel, who has cried about Trump on his show for the past decade, would possibly consider telling a lie in order to make Trump/MAGA look bad.

It was just out of context, you see. We still don't know the shooter's ideology or reasons for doing this, you see. He was just telling jokes, you see.

- The kid's mom is lying because she's MAGA

- The electrician boss is lying because... well, he just is, even though he isn't even political

- Law enforcement is lying because they're in Utah and that's a red state

- The FBI is lying because they work for Trump now

- The texts where he said he killed Charlie for being hateful are fabricated by law enforcement, and never happened

- This whole thing is a pre-planned conspiracy so Trump can seize dictatorial power and destroy adversaries
